Research and development of upper extremity orthopaedic medical devices

I was fortunate to complete my final year engineering project in an accelerated time frame of one semester through a design project internship following the Field Orthopaedics’ program. I stepped through the bio-design process for medical device development and worked closely with an upper extremity orthopaedic surgeon to unpack the problem. This involved delving into the user experience by observing orthopaedic surgery, speaking with occupational therapists, device specialists, and working with our consultant orthopaedic surgeons each week. I conducted a literature review exploring epidemiology, surgical techniques, existing solutions and market, and narrowed in on what value a new solution could provide. From this research I was able to develop acceptance criteria, conduct a design brainstorming session and assess the concepts generated by the team. As I move into a graduate position with the company, I will pick up where I left off with the project and continue with the development of a device.

I worked in project management with an interdisciplinary team from conception to delivery of a project to ensure the best outcome for the company and our customer. My day-to-day tasks included: scheduling manufacturing timelines, managing procurement and purchasing of raw material and parts for projects, attending design review meetings, and general management of project milestones for the team.

During my time as president I had the unique opportunity to grow the capacity of the club not only regarding the membership base, but forging relationships with industry partners and providers. The club traditionally appealed to students in their final year looking for employment, but the executive team worked hard to encourage more participation from 1st and 2nd year undergraduates which resulted in a successful improvement in outreach. We were able to provide forums for students to network with engineers from a range of industries, and ensured they had opportunities to take part in site visits with cardiac and medical engineering research facilities.

I completed half of my work integrated learning hours with the REC looking into the development of a force testing rig. The rig would allow for quantifying mechanical properties of foams used in custom seating cushions under various loading conditions and cyclic testing for more accurate fatigue data.

At Olitek I performed administrative duties under the senior mechanical engineer and his operations support. Here I learned to read and interpret engineering drawings for the purpose of entering parts and assemblies into the internal system for job sheet generation and ordering. I produced orders for parts and steel for a range of fabrication and machining projects, and was responsible for requesting quotes and procurement of some specialised parts. I worked in close contact with the engineering, manufacturing and accounts departments over the course of projects to ensure timely delivery to our customers. In addition to my normal duties, I played a crucial role alongside my supervisor in creating a new internal job quoting system and worked closely with the engineering department and head of manufacturing to adopt the system in its early days.
