About Callum Brooks

Conserving and protecting nature has always been my true passion in life and this has led me to pursuing a career in wildlife conservation. I’ve worked on numerous projects around the world and this has provided an opportunity to develop skills in ecological surveying, community engagement and practical management. I’m currently studying a MSc in Biodiversity Conservation to further my professional development and to help provide the experience that I need to fulfil my dream of having a career in wildlife conservation. Alongside my studying, I also enjoy engaging with other conservationists and so I write content for an online platform that helps engage and inspire a whole community to care more for the environment around them. When I’m not working, you can usually find me outside enjoying the natural beauty that the UK has to offer.

  • Operation Wallacea
    Large Mammal Scientist
    Operation Wallacea Jun 2018 - Jul 2018
    Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, Mexico
I worked for Operation Wallacea during the 2018 field season and I had the responsibility of leading students on surveys that were designed to look for tracks and signs of key indicator species. In this role, I had the opportunity to educate and inspire students by showing them the importance of these key indicator species and the role that they played within the ecosystem. I also educated students on the use of camera trap monitoring to help study the population density of Jaguars (Panthera onca) and the sessions that I ran received great feedback. The data that I collected from the surveys was also submitted to the Mexican government and so I had the important responsibility of ensuring that this data was accurate and of the highest quality. I also maximised my opportunities within this role by volunteering to assist with other surveys, which allowed me to gain experience working with other taxa such as birds, bats and herptofauna.
  • The Nature Conservancy
    Internship
The Nature Conservancy Jul 2017 - Sep 2017
    Zumwalt Prairie Preserve, Usa
During my internship with The Nature Conservancy I had the opportunity to develop my botanical surveying skills. I received training from conservation professionals on how to identify native plant communities and through my hard work in improving these skills, I was then able to lead botanical surveys on my own. Using my surveying and plant identification skills, I collected data on native plan communities and this was used to help assess the impact of cattle grazing on the prairie. My work also involved engaging with various stakeholders and I worked on a project producing habitat assessments and plant inventories for a landowners ranch. Throughout the internship, I also demonstrated my hard work and perseverance, as we were often required to cover areas of more than 20km in tough climatic conditions.
