About Cameron Cochran

During my sophomore year in college, I had no intentions of pursuing a career in education. I had just landed an opportunity to work as an immigration paralegal, where I loved hearing stories from around the globe while helping individuals and families start their American dream. I thought I had it figured out; I’d graduate, go to law school, and continue helping others as an attorney. Then I traveled to South Africa and everything changed. As an environmental education intern with the South African National Parks, I worked with park staff to connect with communities in Cape Town. During my three months abroad, I met some incredibly passionate and hardworking people. I also saw some of the starkest social and economic inequality I had ever witnessed. I met individuals from a variety of backgrounds who were combating this inequality through education. I wanted in. I started my career in education as a high school Science teacher in Detroit through Teach For America. My students inspired me to bring my A-game every day. I worked hard with my students and colleagues to implement rigorous curricula while building strong relationships. During this time, I had the privilege of leading a service trip to help build a small school in partnership with a village in Nepal. I also coached the first boys varsity soccer team in the school’s history. As a teacher, I was able to hone my work ethic, organizational skills, and passion for education. I am a dedicated educational professional with a desire to facilitate engaging, authentic learning experiences for young people, while learning about and combating inequality in the US and abroad.
