The Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) services Baltimore by promoting health and advocating for every individual’s well-being, in order to achieve equity for all residents.Roles / Responsibilities:- Support the implementation of Healthy Baltimore 2020, the BCHD strategic plan for promoting health in Baltimore City by cutting health disparities in half over the next ten years - Coordinate collaborative partnerships across Baltimore City, focusing on various health disparities (e.g. chronic disease prevention, violence prevention) - Support the design of an internal health equity committee to ensure agency responsiveness to race, equity, and inclusion. - Track and monitor health equity targets listed in the strategic plan.

The Howard University's Substance Abuse HIV Outreach Program (SHOP), funded by the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) via a subcontract with McFarland Associates provides a variety of interactive events and experiences designed to disseminate information and change attitudes and behavior related to Substance Abuse and HIV prevention. Student Peer Educators:- Present awareness sessions, workshops and other peer-led interventions that are designed to enhance knowledge, change attitudes and behavior related to substance abuse, HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C.- Provide confidential Rapid HIV Testing, and enter students into continuum of care.- Distribute health education information via flyers, handbills, university listserv, peer-to-peer communication, announcements in the Hilltop (student daily newspaper), classroom announcements and social networking. - Collaborate with over 14 community organizations in the DC area and host Peer Educator prevention sessions, providing an opportunity for exposure to other resources and information related to HIV/AIDS.

The Amgen Scholars Program at NIH is a partnership between the Amgen Foundation, the Foundation for the NIH, and the NIH Office of Intramural Training & Education. Amgen Scholars at NIH spend the summer working at NIH's main campus in Bethesda, Maryland side-by-side with some of the world's leading scientists, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research. During their internships at NIH, scholars are matched with research mentors in the NIH Intramural Research Program (IRP) where they will be immersed in a culture of translational science and will explore important elements of the basic, translational, and clinical research enterprise.- Participate in a customized curriculum that will use journal clubs, case studies, and group activities to develop communication, career readiness, and critical thinking skills.- Explore the relationship between science and society in evening roundtables that examine the role of science, policy, and community engagement in the elimination of health disparities.- Participate in a leadership development program focused on self-exploration, building resiliency, understanding conflict, finding mentors, and understanding emotional intelligence.- Attend the Amgen Scholars US Symposium in California in July to interact with top industry and academic scientists and to network with other Amgen Scholars.- Present at the NIH Summer Poster Day at the end of July.- Establish an individualized development plan to take advantage of the many workshops and seminars offered for all NIH summer interns.
