As Director of Solution and Technology, I lead the Solution Architecture and HCD teams. I set strategic technical direction for the company, lead new offering development, and oversee all sales from a technical perspective (solutions, estimation, team makeup). I also act as Solution Architect on our most important engagements. In addition, I mentor our excellent consultants on systems architecture and design.

Solution ArchitectAs a solution architect I helped clients develop software focused business and technology strategies. This was done through a combination of vision development, strategy workshops, developing investment models, execution planning, organizational transformation impact and planning, and more. I made sure clients understood the impact of the strategy, how to execute it, and how to measure to ensure success.I focused on app modernization - migrating legacy systems to a modern architecture using on prem, hybrid cloud, and public cloud solutions. Other focuses were omni-channel and lean/agile transformations.Work HighlightI worked with top executives at a MedTech company to develop a cloud adoption strategy across their large software product portfolio. It leveraged public cloud while optimizing their on-prem and private cloud implementations. Included were product by product cloud readiness analyses, economic modeling, roadmapping, and lean/devops transformation.Branch Banking ConceptSumma did some great work for our financial services customers. Through that work we’ve found that there were great opportunities to help banks that were transforming their branch banking strategies. In partnership with Samsung Business Services we have created a concept that uses mobile solutions to improve customer experience and operational efficiency, and aligns digital and branch strategies.I bootstrapped this concept, acting as the product manager doing market and competitive analysis, feature roadmapping, and business development. I relied on my experience using lean startup and pragmatic marketing techniques and my strong technical background to build the business for this concept.

Over the years at Summa I’ve led a number of internal initiatives and teams including:- Intellectual Property Development Lead - used Lean Startup, Pragmatic Marketing, and software development expertise to define, validate, and develop IP within Summa- Summa Center of Excellence Lead - worked with senior management to develop Summa’s version of a Center of Excellence, from definition to measurement to bootstrap processes- Summa Architecture Council Lead - initiated and led a group of top technologists at Summa to share knowledge about and learn new software architecture techniques- Best Practices Lead - worked with colleagues to define, document, and ensure use of best practices for delivering customer value to reduce delivery lead times while ensuring high quality

Carnegie Mellon UniversityI spent many great years consulting at Carnegie Mellon University where Summa helped CMU modernize their Student Information System and surrounding applications. I wore many hats at CMU: program manager, software architect, lead developer, business analyst, software tester, account manager, and others.The last work I did at CMU was Program Manager for the multi-year application modernization effort. I oversaw multiple projects that involved more than 50 people. My primary responsibilities included forecasting and roadmap development and tracking, risk analysis, managing multiple projects, and coaching CMU through their Lean and Agile transformation - successfully introducing Lean, Kanban, and Scrum to successfully deliver projects with a combination of CMU and Summa people. During that time I was also the account manager for the CMU account.I directly managed 10 Summa consultants and our design team and ensured the work we did was of the excellent quality that Summa expects and our customers deserve. In addition to managing the Program, I was a software architect ensuring that we built a usable, scalable, and maintainable set of applications. I began at CMU as the technical team lead and worked with CMU to design a pure Service Oriented Architecture. Over time we simplified the integration architecture to be REST based instead of SOAP based. I developed the MVC framework in Google Web Toolkit that we used in early versions of our applications.CMU has also had me do a number of other technical activities. This includes working with a potential partner for CMU to help them service orient their monolithic ERP, analyzing and recommending multiple software packages (including an ESB), helping define and setup our runtime environments based on Tomcat and WebLogic, and developing data management strategies for the systems we are modernizing.

PLS LogisticsAt PLS I acted as an architect, project manager, and developer helping PLS service orient their large Java based supply-chain management/logistics solution. I developed a UI framework based on the ext-js javascript library that the team used to improve usability and look and feel of the application. Additionally I successfully introduced PLS to Scrum, taking them from an ad hoc delivery process to a streamlined, predictable process that could react to business needs rapidly and reliably. I was the Scrum Master and also did all the planning for the project.HighmarkI was the team lead on a project at Highmark to evolve a homegrown reporting application into an enterprise reporting solution. This was done in a highly-regulated and tightly-managed environment. I again successfully introduced Scrum as our project methodology, and XP practices as our development methodology. I also worked with engineering and architecture teams within Highmark to implement a new service based architecture that included adding new frameworks and tools to Highmark's portfolio. Because the team was small I wore many hats including architect, lead developer, business analyst, tester, and project manager.
