About Carrie Meyer

A lover of history and curator/administrator at heart, I love organizing and directing activities and making order from chaos. My natural inclination is to figure out the best and most efficient way to arrive at a solution for problems and projects. I don't cut corners, but know how to compromise and create consensus within the team. Planning exhibitions and collection management has played into my strengths by thinking multiple years into the future and streamlining processes to make sure both short term and long term projects and deadlines are met. I love history and teaching others about it, whether in the classroom, through an exhibition, a presentation, or a paper.

    In June 2016, the Education and Curatorial departments were combined under my direction. With this change I have continued the duties I had as the Curator but have also absorbed the Education initiatives of the museum as well.Direct all curatorial and education functions of the museum including direct supervision of 5 full-time and 3 part-time staff, 20-24 interns annually, and 20 volunteers, exhibition development of annual improvements to the permanent exhibitions and at least 5 internally developed exhibitions annually, liaison with over 15 institutional partners regarding rental of traveling exhibitions and object loans, administered strategic planning initiatives and federal grant funds toward the complete digitization of a 1.1 million image Photo Archive, coordinate 20-30 incoming and outgoing object loans annually and implement preservation plans and procedures for the 60,000+ object collection and 9,000+ object collection of rare books, documents, currency and coins. In addition, I develop and administer the annual department and exhibition budgets, as well as a CAP assessment, federal grants and special project funds as available, act as ambassador and advocate for the department and the museum with community partners and media outlets, contribute to strategic planning and fund-raising initiatives, and conduct workshops, distance learning programs, and educational lectures for community partners, adults, youth, and Boy Scouts. The department serves 40,000 K-12 students through field trips annually, and also hosts digital learning programs, lectures, exhibition programming, camps, scouts, and community engagement activities.
