Throughout the summer, I participated in a competitive and intensive research internship at University of South Florida. This program consisted of professional development workshops, research seminars, skill building workshops, and the partnership with a faculty mentor to contribute to a research project. I worked alongside Dr. Kristin Kosyluk and Dr. Jerome Galea to research the feasibility and acceptability of a chatbot prototype aimed at connecting first responders to mental health services. I also assisted a fellow research scholar in analyzing the empathetic responses of crisis counselors to later be applied to the chatbot’s responses. At the end of the summer, I compiled my findings into a PowerPoint presentation, and I had the opportunity to give a 10-minute presentation at a research symposium.
