Everybody has a story. Mine starts the same way that many others do.... Nearly 18 years into a career of leading teams in blue chip professional services firms, Chris grew increasingly disenchanted with the professional experience that was provided by those firms and their leaders, and he felt trapped. Chris found his purpose in an unexpected place. As an experienced youth soccer coach, he often considered the rewarding experience he finds working with his teams. “There are two types of coaches out here,” he is known to say. “… those who prioritize the player experience - giving them all of the tools and opportunities they need to pursue their passion in their game. And those who try to win.” The parallel became clear almost instantly. Too many leaders prioritize winning the game over the experience of the people - sometimes even at the expense of their people. Too often, Chris recognized leaders sacrificing organizational health for results, and saw the negative impact this had on people. He was living his own case study. Organizational Health not only mattered, it mattered more than anything else. Grantland Rice was right. Organizations win not because they prioritize a result, but because they define intentional and shared outcomes, and then enable the behaviors that can consistently and sustainably pursue them.
