Being a good manager has little to do with how well you know the jobs of those who you manage and a great deal to do with how you lead. Having served US Army and working at electrical utility, I have learned to love acronyms my personal favorite is one that I have made up that summarized leadership to me. Listen Engage Accept Define Empower Responsibility (L.E.A.D.E.R.)I have lead a wide variety of teams from linemen to Iraqi soldiers. If you don’t listen to those you are leading you will never know if there are obstacles that will prevent you from leading them effectively. If you don’t engage honestly with your team they will likely notice and rather than doing what is needed to succeed they will do only what is required to get by. You must accept people for who they are. You must clearly define your role and theirs, along with your goals and objectives. You must empower them to make decisions. Finally once you do those things you must take full responsibility for the actions of your team. As a Chief Warrant Officer and as a Operations then Logistics Manager understanding what leadership is and what the difference between someone that can manage a team and someone that can lead a team has lead me to success and personal fulfillment in both careers. When I go to work in uniform or out I strive to do my job to the best of my abilities. While I in general feel that I am only doing what is necessary and what I would expect those around me to do I am told by my friends. “That when employees that work at remote offices ask you to come to their office more often than the regularly scheduled visits and you are given a bronze star during a deployment for what you see as just doing your job you are actually going above and beyond.”
