I pitched an article to The Sunday Post about the controversial Viking Energy wind farm being built on Shetland's mainland. The article focused mainly on local couple Donnie and Evelyn Morrison (Who I also went out the isle from my home-island of Whalsay to interview) as their home was right alongside the construction. The article was published in the 'Raw Deal' section of the newspaper both online and in print.
  • Shetland Selfdom
    Website Developer
    Shetland Selfdom Jan 2020 - Jun 2021
    Whalsay, Scotland, United Kingdom
In the third year of my degree I created a website named 'Shetland Selfdom' via Wix. I delved into a variety of different aspects of the isles from music, art, culture and nature to dialect, identity, forced labour and current social issues such as racial and gender inequalities.
  • The Scotsman
    Freelance Journalist
    The Scotsman Apr 2019 - Jun 2021
    Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
I have worked at BBC Radio Shetland on three different occasions. Once was for two weeks, the others was one week. I started doing work experience at BBC Radio Shetland after I won Shetland Young Writer of the Year in 2014 when I was still at school. I had submitted a poem in Shetland dialect, as did many others from schools throughout the isles and mine was selected as one of the winners. Consequently, I had to read my poem out on the radio and do an interview with Mary Blance. She urged me to do work experience with BBC Radio Shetland following my interview as she thought I would be good at it. I took her up on that offer and went there on multiple occasions.

  • The Shetland Times Limited
    Newspaper Reporter
The Shetland Times Limited 2013 - Jun 2021
    Lerwick, Scotland, United Kingdom
I have written for The Shetland Times newspaper on numerous occasions in and out of the newsroom. I have done up to three weeks work experience at a time, starting from the age of 14. On other occasions, I have either pitched an article to them via phone call or email which has later been published, or they have contacted me to ask if I can cover a particular story. For example, I recently wrote about my experience of being a student down in Edinburgh during the coronavirus pandemic and how this has a much more devastating impact on students from the Scottish islands (e.g. Shetland, Orkney, the Western Isles) than those who live on the mainland.
  • Impulse Magazine
    Journalist
    Impulse Magazine Sep 2019 - Dec 2019
    Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
In the third year of our degree, our class created a glossy magazine. I wrote an article about Shetland introducing nature for mental health patients, which was published in the magazine. I was also a sub-editor for some of the articles and ensured any mistakes were eradicated.
