The class involves self-expression, which will facilitate self-efficacy and confident dancing. At this point the students will be able to demonstrate basic “free-style” dance by linking acquired moves together. Various stretches will be taught in order to decrease the chance of injury. Through dance movements and routines, we will put all students through a series of drills designed to to increase the heart rate and improve stamina. All dance steps will be used as a form of exercise that will focus on upper- and lower-body strength.We will teach the value of goal setting and attainment through dance, but these are attributes that students will be able to successfully carry themselves through other life situations. Students will set personal weekly goals. These goals may seem difficult and impossible at times. As mentors, our role is to encourage students to push past their negative thoughts and show that there is no limit to what they can accomplish. This on going cycle of goal setting and attainment will prepare the students’ minds for the future that lies ahead of them.
