Uganda

For 7 years I lived and worked in Uganda, scaling Fenix International, an off-grid energy company across Africa. I joined in 2012 as one of just 3 people on the ground in Africa. As Global Marketing Director I helped grow the company to over 1,000 full time employees, opened commercial markets in Uganda, Zambia, Ivory Coast, Benin, Nigeria and Mozambique plus established manufacturing in China with engineering support in San Fran. We delivered clean, affordable, life-changing solar power to over 3 million people. This was achieved in-conjunction with Africa's largest teleco companies - creating win-win partnerships which leveraged their brand equity, Mobile Money infrastructure and sales channels to acquire last mile, off-grid customers.The business model enabled customers to purchase solar power systems at an affordable daily rate via Mobile Money and build a unique credit score which increased their customer journey and opened doors to additional life-changing products and services. In 2018, ENGIE, the world’s largest independent electricity utility, acquired Fenix outright marking the first successful exit in the industry and now ENGIE with Fenix are poised to be leaders in their effort to achieve universal access to clean energy.
