Initiated and executed the development of nanophotonic chemical sensors using TiO2 waveguides and mirco-ring resonators. Using evanescent Raman spectroscopy, we measured which chemicals are on our surface by observing chemical vibrational information. This work has many applications, from environmental monitoring in liquids, to "lab on a chip" applications for biology. I also coordinated teams of graduate and undergraduate students on various research projects.Key accomplishments: - Fabricated record-setting low-loss TiO2 waveguides (a >4x reduction at visible wavelengths) - Demonstrated evanescent Raman scattering with 60x greater efficiency than previous reports - Research resulted in 6 publications, 8 presentations, and >$300k in funding

As a research assistant for Prof. Eric Mazur, I developed titanium dioxide as a novel material platform for integrated nonlinear optics. This material alternative to silicon photonics combines a high nonlinear refractive index with low two-photon absorption at telecommunications wavelengths with potential applications in ultra-high bandwidth communication systems, all-optical switching, all-optical logic, wavelength conversion, interconnects (including single-photon emitters such as NV centers in diamond), and as a source of entangled photons for quantum information and quantum computing applications.Key accomplishments: - Demonstrated the first nonlinear optics in on-chip TiO2 nanophotonic devices - Initiated and co-wrote 6 funded grants, totaling >$1M in research support - Research resulted in 2 patents, 14 papers, a book chapter, and 27 presentations
