After a couple years managing 40-50 people in 4 teams, was a bit stifled between layers of management. I mentioned this to an executive who inquired and voila -- I'm now back on more exciting things than ever! Though it is very interesting how it seems I could do this or that so much more easily if I was just running that area or that team, etc..Until the pendulum swings back to line management, I am happily doing initiatives based work, advancing our customers'​ security and privacy on things often considered too hard, too big, or for whatever reason have not been accomplished for years.My focus remains on customer outcomes through security done in ways that tend to run true rather than require constant correction. My designs and approach to big problems have both continued to evolve as I learn through working with some very talented people. The bag of tricks and ideas grows!My work is concentrated in the following specialties:- Innovation in design and application of Access Governance, meaning that connection between the business concept of an entitlement to do, have, manage, or access anything. Anything.- Creative application of technologies, techniques, access and Secret Sauce, to improve visibility, record-keeping, and reactive capability to what an entity (person, company, nation, or process) did, could do, or likely did, anywhere.- Various large security "elephants" that just need a matching menu to be eaten. This is about connecting with people across the organisation, creating that blue sky and a credible path to get there. And then getting the first step to happen, with lots of cheerleading and supporting of good ideas and behaviours along the way.My cup runneth over but I always have space for a coffee, especially if you have a good security idea that would benefit Telstra customers.

This role manages 4 teams within Security Operations: Access Governance, Identity and Access Services, Telstra CERT, and Vulnerability Services.The team is split between Melbourne CBD and the Clayton GOC (Global Operations Centre).Besides people management and assisting ~40 hard-working staff, significant time is spent interacting with the many other teams directly involved with ours. Incident management with the CERT, scanning and testing with VS, dealing with physical and logical access controls issues (e.g., PKI, remote-access tokens, and good old accounts/entitlements on systems), and keeping on top of "who has access to what" across hundreds of entitlement domains offers many surprises and opportunities to advance the security of Telstra customer and corporate assets. It's a good thing I have a staff comprised of rock stars and miracle workers!

With the departure of our CISO in October and the search for a replacement not yet complete, I Was asked to fill an additional role as what's called "General Manager" while the incumbent holds the acting CISO role.As a stand-in, all I can say is it's great to have a broader mandate and again, the pleasure of exceptional, dedicated Telstra security people reporting to me. In addition to my day job, I have also inherited the "front door" of Security Operations, the customer- and business-centric team which works tirelessly to ensure Telstra's security commitments are met, and that internal products and projects adhere to the various policies and practices required to create a secureable deliverable. Also the Technology Operations team that keep many applications from enterprise and customer antivirus services to IDS and SIEM systems.This role should be short-lived but resembles the senior manager role with a bit bigger scope and more opportunity to make that difference that keeps me happy here at Telstra.

I was offered this full-time role within the CTO to convert my ex-pat status from Canada to permanent. The fundamental change, other than a salary increase and new manager, was increased scope as this was a regional role. This gave me some exposure to other customers' needs in addition to Telstra's, and also put me in a team with very gifted and intelligent colleagues.My primary on the job duties remained as below with the Telstra account.One particularly rewarding bit was being able to author a position document on "Security in an NBN World" which was then published by the company, something entirely new for me and quite interesting!

This was an ex-pat position with full relocation from Ottawa to Melbourne.Delivered all aspects of security in support of Telstra's next generation network:- security requirements (each one measurable, achievable, concise)- consulting with solution designers- contributing security elements to designs if needed- signoff on all designs- reaching agreement with customer security technicians- ensuring customer security management agreement- tests for each security requirement, input to test cases- problem resolution when cust demands exceed current product or technology capabilities- avid campaigner for improving deliveries to include security- managed a small team directly and security for all projects indirectly- also managed "special ops" with 3rd party labs on an as-needed basisI think the best part of this position was my colleagues at both Alcatel-Lucent and Telstra who really work to make a difference, to do the right thing for Telstra while ensuring regulatory and contractual compliance as well.
