About Christen Klinger, Ph.D.

“There is no end to education. It is not that you read a book, pass an examination, and finish with education. The whole of life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of learning.” - Jiddu KrishnamurtiI firmly believe that the ability to learn and the willingness to explore new ideas and tools are the two most important skills one can have. Over my career, I’ve consistently strived to move beyond a single box or label, to always grow and apply this knowledge to solve worthwhile problems in the biomedical field. This has also led me to another passion: teaching and mentoring others. After all, if you can teach it then you know it.To date, these efforts have resulted in (amongst others): • The creation of a comprehensive team-wide training program for DrugBank, comprising 6 stages, 36 modules, and 247 lessons, with a 100% adoption rate • A working knowledge across both backend (e.g., SQL, Graph Databases, Ruby/Rails, Python/Django) and frontend (e.g., JavaScript, TypeScript, Vue, React, HTML, CSS) development tasks • The successful completion of multiple research projects, leading to publication of 20 peer-reviewed articles and 3 book chapters • The chance to present at international conferences, including in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Czech RepublicTo be successful in the biomedical space today requires that those with subject matter expertise and those with technical expertise work together seamlessly to achieve organizational goals. This poses a challenge, as most biologists have a limited knowledge of computing and most developers and data scientists have a limited knowledge of biology/chemistry. Bioinformaticians (or computational biologists, if you prefer) can help bridge that gap, because they can speak both languages and “translate” concepts across them. This saves time, reduces errors, and improves outcomes. With my extensive experience as both a biologist and a developer, I feel I am uniquely qualified to fill such a role.Outside of work I am an avid cyclist, weight lifter, and climber. I have put my enthusiasm for cycling to good use in the past by raising money for Multiple Sclerosis research (and hope to continue to do so in the future). I also enjoy DIY projects, as they employ a lot of the same skills such as project management and problem solving that are so valuable in the workplace.I love to meet new people and discuss everything from molecular biology to evolutionary biology to computer science with them. Please feel free to drop me a connection request!
