I began university with the intention of becoming a veterinarian. I worked hard toward that goal, balancing my degree, a diploma, jobs, and extensive volunteer work. When I finished my undergraduate degree in biological sciences, however, I’d found a passion for science and environmental work and I decided to explore those passions.I joined Golder Associates, which allowed me to work on reclamation projects and learn a new skill: project management. I spent nearly 5 years working on a variety of environmental and permitting projects.I started my own consulting company in 2015: Twisted Nature Biology Consulting & Environmental Education. My company allows me freedom to tackle tough challenges with solutions with a meaningful impact. I participate in climate change initiatives, am launching an informed food project, and perform technical reviews of industrial applications and environmental impact assessments. I offer environmental education activities for all ages, addressing a range of topics tailored exclusively for the group’s needs. For example, classes on riparian health assessment, climate change, environmental footprint, & biodiversity. In 2015, I also seized the opportunity to join ALUS Canada as Western Hub Manager. ALUS is a community-developed, farmer-delivered program which helps farmers and ranchers to increase ecosystem services on their land such as clean water, biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and clean air. As a member of staff for the grassroots national charitable organization, my role is dynamic. I provide support to Coordinators; outreach to potential communities and participants; coordinate grant deliverables and reporting; develop program structure; advocate provincially for environmental policy which supports good land stewardship and healthy farms; build and maintain relationships with community partners, technical partners, and funding partners; and recognize the agricultural community as environmental solution-providers.
