Performing laboratory experiments pertaining to organic and analytical chemistry - Designing and implementing scientific research to obtaining new and novel compounds orientated toward biological activity, which includes planning detailed procedures for defined projects including timelines, methodological approaches, expected results as well as potential difficulties, and necessary reagents and resources; often troubleshooting problems or aiding others when problems in synthesis occur - Regular use of Reaxys and SciFinder to browse literature and relevant reactions - Keeping an up-to-date and detailed lab notebook using a uniform format used by everyone in our laboratory -Purification of compounds by column chromatography, distillation, or recrystallization - Reviewing, analyzing, and interpreting scientific data and results (GC-MS, NMR, IR, TLC); extensive knowledge of operating various HRMS instruments as well as Bruker NMR instruments; experienced in interpreting 1D and 2D NMR experiments - Regularly attend group meetings once a week to provide regular updates and communication on project results; presenting research in an individual presentation on a three month basis (often fill in for others when there are time conflicts with their individual presentations) - Advising and mentoring a small group of undergraduate students who perform assigned experiments and help maintain the lab spaces; grading and evaluating students' performances if they are taking directed studies courses - Acting as a stand in teaching assistant and class administrator for an advanced organic chemistry lecture and lab course; meeting with students, professors, and other teaching assistants regularly - Maintaining and restocking lab spaces as needed - Ensuring that personnel abide by departmental, state, and federal safety regulations; helped write and review SOPs - Submitting fully characterized synthetic compound to the NIH for anticancer evaluation (monthly)
