My research interests involve early modern drama (especially the work of Shakespeare) and the grotesque in performance, and as such, my interests have facilitated an interdisciplinary critical approach to the field of English studies. I frequently find myself drawing from my insights as a performer in my academic endeavors and instructional practices, oftentimes, for example, assigning Shakespeare’s plays in my writing composition courses. I set high expectations for my students to engage with challenging texts, but I nevertheless try to balance these expectations with a high degree of attentiveness to the diverse needs of multiethnic student populations. While I am immensely grateful for the wealth of opportunities that the University of California has provided to me for well over a decade, not the least of which was the privilege to teach a culturally and socioeconomically diverse student population, I am hoping to broaden my horizons and gain experience teaching elsewhere. Though I have taught primarily at a four-year university, I would cherish the opportunity to share my academic experiences and teaching abilities with community college students, as well, especially those who hope to transfer to four-year programs.
