Indigenous societies worldwide are taking back control of the social determinants affecting their future growth and development from settler authority. The status-quo within neo-colonial settler societies overtime has resulted in a form of cognitive imperialism for Indigenous society, which disrupts holistic growth and development at the individual and communal level. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (2015) highlights guiding principles for returning to a nation-to-nation relationship and identifies the recovery and revitalization of Indigenous knowledges, languages and world-views as a starting point for reconciliation. My broader research focuses on the current social reality facing Indigenous societies living within neo-colonial settler societies. Recovering and revitalizing Indigenous languages is the most critical step as many of them are close to extinction. Where there is mutual collaboration between Indigenous and Settler societies, Indigenous languages are flourishing, empowering holistic growth process that have historically been stymied by the imposition of settler colonialism. As a person of mixed Indigenous and non-Indigenous ancestry I have seen first-hand how the legacy of settler colonialism evokes emotional and heated reactions, and still sullies Indigenous and non-Indigenous relations throughout Canada. Between the margins of this long standing debate stands the next generation of young people. On both sides, our children are watching us as we navigate this conflict and will learn their role in this conflict based on our actions.
