About Christopher Lean
My current position is as a Research Fellow with the Theory and Methods in the Bioscience group at the University of Sydney and an Associate Investigator with the ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology. My primary areas of research are philosophy of the life sciences (biology, ecology, medicine) and ethics (bioethics, environment, technology). Recently, I have been writing about the role of biotechnology in conservation science and on invasive species. I am also the Chief Investigator in the grant "The Wild Yeast Biobank", we are creating a citizen science resource for the collection of wild yeast in collaboration with breweries. Check out our website: https://www.wildyeastzoo.com/In 2021, I was work in Prof. W. Ford Doolittles lab at Dalhousie University researching ecosystem evolution. Previously, I was a researcher at the University of Sydney working on laws of nature in ecology and the moral and legal ramifications of online genetic genealogies. My PhD at the Australian National University was awarded in 2019. My dissertation, written under the supervision of Kim Sterelny, is entitled Ecological Kinds and the Units of Conservation. It focuses on the ontology of conservation science and its consequences for measuring biodiversity. This work lies at the intersection of philosophy of science, metaphysics, ethics, and policy. The first was Laws, Models, and Analogies in Ecology, researching whether there are laws of nature in ecological science that could be used in conservation. The second was Formal Approaches to Legal Reasoning where I considered the role of data science in legal reasoning; primarily the use of algorithms in parole decisions and the nature of genetic inferences from genetic databases in trials.
