The world is complex and fascinating, and becomes more so the more I learn about it. Being with inquisitive people who value learning is invigorating for me, so I enjoy guiding the exploration of young people in collaboration with other educational professionals. I take pleasure in identifying which facts, questions, and ways of presenting information will be most valuable to students and colleagues. I also appreciate how often teaching something has helped me gain a clearer understanding or fresh perspective on the matter.In addition to being energized by the process of learning, I have experienced how understanding opens the door to peace, freedom, happiness and joy. For example, science offers insights to the interconnectedness and magnificence of our earth. Learning other languages and cultures has helped me broaden my worldview. Similarly, an understanding of the historical roots of the present moment helps me act with compassion and, I hope, create positive change in the world. As someone who has benefited from many opportunities to learn and grow, I feel a responsibility to discover and meet the learning needs of others.Finally, I am talented at drawing people together. Helping others find common ground in order to achieve a shared goal is fulfilling for me. I used and developed this strength during my service in the Peace Corps, and I have used it in classrooms to help students engage in group projects and activities. In a teaching position, I can use these skills to create a community in which students and colleagues feel valued, supported, and excited to learn.
