Postdoctoral research with Prof. Jeffrey W. Bode, where previously a novel potassium acyltrifluoroborate (KAT) - hydroxylamine ligation reaction showed potential but had not been applied as a method for bioconjugation. We realized this potential by incorporating hydroxylamines onto the surface of recombinant proteins and reacted them with various macromolecular KAT reagents. Optimization of the ligation conditions enabled not only the site-specific PEGylation but also the dimerization of complex proteins in a stoichiometric fashion.

Doctoral research with Prof. Andrei K. Yudin, where a streamlined synthesis of previously unreported aziridine-2-carboxylic acid (Azy)-containing cyclic peptides was developed and their reactivity probed through various late-stage functionalizations. The site-specific integration of linear fragments into macrocyclic entities from a purely synthetic approach was successfully demonstrated for the first time. Finally, a robust and efficient multi-step synthesis of coveted aziridine aldehyde dimers was developed.

Undergraduate honours research project with Prof. Victor Snieckus, investigating the scope of the reduction of tertiary benzamides to aldehydes and aryl-O-carbamates to phenols with zirconocene hydrochloride (Schwartz’s reagent). The utilization of ReactIR techniques, led to a greater mechanistic understanding.

Undergraduate summer research internship with Prof. Robert S. Brown, where the mechanism of the methanolysis of phosphate diesters catalyzed by a dinuclear zinc complex was investigated. Through concise kinetic measurements, a significant rate acceleration over the background reaction was discovered.
