I want to join the frontlines of eco-city creatives. Let me tell you how I got there. After years of travel, soul-searching, and a growing desire to shape a better world, I returned to my hometowns Easton and Phillipsburg with my heart set on one intention: to make a difference in the local food scene with a city-scale impact. I started from scratch. I apprenticed at the Easton Urban Farm, served farm-fresh vegetables weekly in a food insecure neighborhood, volunteered for the design and installation of Nurture Nature's asphalt garden, worked as a field assistant and marketeer at certified organic Comeback Farm in NJ, and trained under an orchardist. All of those efforts and connections culminated in an opportunity to join the Greater Easton Development Partnership. With the support of a small team of colleagues, directors, staff, and a sponsor I designed, launched, and established the Farmstand at the Easton Public Market. My mission for the Farmstand is direct: increase access to fresh, safe, and local food. We do this through retail service, entrepreneurial projects, and food justice initiatives. From this outpost I've covered a lot of ground:✓Maintained healthy business for 5 years aligned to a budget✓Managed retail operations including buying, merchandising, customer service, POS consoles, a positive work culture, staff training and oversight✓Care for 50+ professional relationships from suppliers, artisans, and growers, to colleagues, an assistant, and fellow community leaders✓Partnered with the Easton Hunger Coalition, donating seconds to food pantries, fundraising for 100 emergency meal kits✓Launched an online store✓Distributed over 5000 pounds of local apples to essential healthcare, social, and senior-living workers during the COVID-19 pandemic✓Received 2019 Annual Award by Easton Hunger Coalition; 2016 Food Respect Award by Lehigh Valley Food Policy CouncilI've learned a lot about myself, but two things stand out. First, the community I serve energizes me; their vision and needs are foundational.Second, more than feeding people, I've enjoyed building a place where people can eat. But I know there could be more: a place to unwind, a place to play, a place to explore: public art, community art builds, sculpture gardens, edible alleyways, pocket parks, public green space, pedestrian plazas -- all with eco-conscious characteristics and local soul.If you share any interest in urban revitalization and community development, let's connect. Become part of my journey. Show me the next step. Let's shape a better world.
