I am a well traveled individual who has worked in many career fields. To begin my professional career, I lived for a year in Zambia teaching math and science to 8th and 9th graders. I learned how to adapt to new a environment and communicate with those whose language I do not speak along with a sense of self humility necessary for living in a different culture. Above all, this experience taught me the meaning of hard work and the necessity of perseverance in success. Following Zambia, I completed my first Bachelor's degree in writing studies from Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, VA. I worked as a freelance journalist while also working as a front desk receptionist at a hotel. I learned the importance of people skills, both working in the hospitality industry and in interviewing people for articles. Furthermore, I am adept at both written and oral communication -- paramount skills for success in journalism and hospitality.After having lived my stint in Harrisonburg, a job opportunity in Pennsylvania came my way. I worked as an assistant grower at Creek Hill Nursery in Lancaster, PA, growing a variety of woody perennials and succulents. Using an integrated pest management system, I ensured the healthy growth of plants in 8 hoop greenhouses. At Creek Hill, I also learned important management skills, both of time and people. Certain aspects of the nursery industry require timely applications of chemicals and well-timed maintenance of the vernalized crop. I was able to do this while managing a small team in my greenhouses.I am currently studying turfgrass science at North Carolina State University. I've since completed an internship at Pikewood National Golf Club in Morgantown, WV (ranked #40 in the U.S.), and I hope to continue this career path and strive for the goal of first becoming an assistant superintendent at a golf course, then eventually a superintendent.
