I worked in Transmission, Contract Partner Management at Tennessee Valley Authority as an Electrical Engineering Intern. One of our primary missions was to handle the extra design work that TVA, Transmission, In-House Design departments do not have the time or manpower to handle and still meet TVA deadlines. This past year, I had a fantastic opportunity to serve at Edwin Bohr Electronics, Inc. I ended up voluntarily leaving because college became too intense to handle both.This was my first entry into the engineering industry. My experience with this awesome company led me to completely switch my major to electrical engineering when I was approached about it by a graduate student co-worker. I enjoyed my work with the extra friendly co-workers and management, while noticing their strong sense of discipline and quality of service.One of my primary roles was disassembling, processing, and reassembling the array of electro-mechanical train components. These components were received from numerous large and small railroad companies scattered around the United States, Canada, and Mexico.I worked with components such as power transfer switches, magnetic transfer switches, power contactors, axel-pole alternators, vane motors, and other similar key parts. This very delicate, technical work increased my knowledge of tools, along with strengthening my problem solving skills.Another important part of my role was cleaning and repainting housings of units and other parts before reassembly. This process took many different steps for each type of unit, so I quickly found myself taking notes about each process.I was trained by the senior technicians to use machinery such as sandblasters, ultrasonic cleaners, and large parts washers. I was also trained on the safety protocols and maintenance of these machines.The most important experience was our team meetings. The staff regularly met to brainstorm about projects, housekeeping, and process improvement. During the summer of 2012, I had the opportunity to work with '84 Lumber Company before going back to college that fall. Coming out of my freshman year of college, I was considering civil engineering as a major. This job was a great opportunity to learn about the lumber business and possibly get my foot in the door of a civil engineering firm or large construction company.Most of my work as a yard person was either completed outside in the main storage/loading yard and inside the warehouse. These facilities are extremely large and I quickly found myself adapting to massive industrial environments as a forklift operator and yard worker.I had plenty of exposure to different types of building materials as I built and loaded many large scale shipments. My independence strengthened as my supervisor taught me to build these shipments alone while he worked on his own.The primary skill I developed was forklift operation. I was trained to skillfully control a large, diesel forklift as I operated around heavy semi traffic. My supervisor also taught me how to load thousands of pounds of materials unto flatbed trucks and how to carefully unload new stock from incoming trucks. Many times we operated in heavy wind, rain or intense heat. Commonly, I was responsible for handling inventory of the main yard, along with aiding the inner warehouse staff with the docking bay shipping and receiving department. I handled shipments of doors, windows, MDF crown, etc.When I wasn't working my main role as operator, I was cleaning the facility.
