A Life Out of the OrdinaryGrowing up in SoCal I spent most of my childhood dripping saltwater on someone’s floor because I couldn’t stay out of the ocean. I liked school and was in the National Honor Society. However, I was missing direction. After a couple of years in college, drifting in the wind, on the Dean’s List, I felt like I needed to give something back to my country. I grew up valuing God, Family and Country so the drive to the Army recruiting office seemed natural. It was a direction. I asked to see what the Army could teach me. The sergeant said, “Well son you need to be an Airborne Infantryman.” He was right.As a soldier in the 82nd Airborne Division we were encouraged to pay attention to detail, seek responsibility and in the absence of orders, Get It Done. This was extremely stimulating to me. I became a sergeant and led a Recon Team into battle in Iraq in 1991. It was a group of exceptional men doing exceptional things. I still wear that uniform on my heart. After leaving behind the Army, I married an Italian and started a life in Italy. I had to create a life, in a new culture, in a new language and on their terms. I took away from this an increased mental flexibility and heightened sensitivity toward other cultures. This allowed me, professionally, to take responsibility for business development, in diverse sectors. I started what was to be a trend in my career. “Here Chris, take these 25 countries and expand our business in each one. However, you have to ask us for any money you need to invest on a case by case basis.” At that point I learned that asking forgiveness is not that hard, as long as sales are trending upward in double digits and you can get it done with what you have, give or take some creative expenses. International business is challenging and fulfilling. It just doesn’t get any better.Now I’m looking for more responsibility. I can’t wait to see what opportunity is going to present itself.
