Christy Smith is a former California State Legislator, non-profit founder and director, public school board member, policy analyst at the US Department of Education, and an appointed member of the California Delta Stewardship Council. Smith ran for Congress in the 2020 and 2022 cycles in a highly competitive north Los Angeles County District. She raised millions of dollars for the campaign, making the race one of the closest in the nation. She set the campaign vision and direction focused on economic development, education, healthcare access, gun law reform, climate action, reproductive freedom, economic, social, and environmental justice. As a distinguished state legislator, Smith authored and passed bills addressing public education, homeowner protections, college affordability and effective governance, which were signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom. Her legislative package also included a landmark law, that removes barriers for survivors of human trafficking to access victims’ compensation. Additionally, Smith shepherded historic investments in California emergency management and wild fire protection, and secured millions of dollars in direct investment to her district. Appointed by California Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, Christy recently served two years on the California Delta Stewardship Council as a statewide official, engaging stakeholders and employing evidence-based public policy strategies to protect California's water supply and restore the Delta ecosystem. Prior to the State Assembly, Smith served two terms as a Governing Board Member of the highly regarded Newhall School District. She chaired the successful Measure E Prop 39 bond campaign for the Newhall District, which has provided $60 million in resources for facility and technology upgrades. A staunch advocate for arts education, she ensured that the district maintained comprehensive music and visual arts programs and was instrumental in the founding of the Newhall Family Theatre for Performing Arts. Christy started her career in public service as an analyst at the U.S. Department of Education. While raising her two daughters, Christy was very active in public education advocacy, starting a local non-profit eduction foundation before being elected to the Newhall School Board in 2009. She served as the Vice President for Legislative Affairs for the Santa Clarita Valley Trustees Association, representing five, K-12 school districts and the Santa Clarita Community College District in the state capitol and for the California School Boards Association.
