As a member of the host networking team my focus is on the networking aspects of the Linux kernel and optimizing network performance across the Fastly stack. These duties regularly include cross-team collaboration, specification of work, test planning, and development methodologies. A number of projects I am involved with rely on BPF to handle custom logic regarding packet handling across the fleet of servers. Fastly maintains infrastructure of in-house kernel development and management. One of my early projects was refactoring and optimizing the build and deployment process for the team. This work included writing custom Chef logic, CI integration using Jenkins, and automated smoke testing with Tesuto.

A member of the core engineering team at EdgeCast and continued on through the Verizon acquisition. I was responsible for several large projects and worked on many others. This was a full-stack role and work covered nearly all aspects of the CDN. Technologies like DNS, load balancing, anycast, and more were part of my daily work.Notable projects:Architect and developer of a global multi-terabit DDOS detection and mitigation platform. The system relies on packet sampling at the edge and aggregation of packet data. The application can instruct the delivery network to filter the traffic if necessary. A patent based on some of my work is under review titled: "Network Attack Mitigation Based on Distributed Packet Analysis"Architect and developer of custom software to perform synchronization of thousands of globally distributed servers to a load-balanced Subversion server system. Years later this was converted to an internal Git package delivery system.I was a member of the incident response “tiger” team that responded to any major network event, outage, or intrusion. This team was seen as the last resort for solving any network or software issue anywhere in the CDN both logically and physically.

Greater San Diego Area

During this time I worked as an independent software contractor focused on developing and maintaining an embedded Linux router software stack. This included the OS, routing features and logic, and UI. The system utilized a combination of PERL and Python with a Flask user interface for managing the device.

As a founding member of the team I participated in the design, development and sales of the NetAccess Gateway. The device was a visitor based network gateway. (Back in the old days, you know, before DHCP was prevalent.) It performed tasks like automatic client IP discovery (ProxyARP), captive portaling, walled gardens, billing integration with 3rd party systems. The system relied heavily on iptables automation. The product was sold as a hardware appliance.

Greater New York City Area

Designed and built complete network for a startup Internet provider in the greater NYC area. My role was take a 'paper' ISP and convert all of their customers to being on network. This including provisioning servers, routers, DSLAMs, and other networking gear into Level3 data centers. In addition I was responsible for building and maintaining all of the software used to control and monitor the network.

Field technician installing ISDN, DS1, and DS3 circuits from PacBell. Also configuring and installing Cisco, ACC and Gandalf routers. Multiplexing installations with NEC M13 muxes.
