In the summer of 2024 I traded in late nights at the news desk for more time with my family and a career I never anticipated being invited let alone accepting the invitation into. In 2019, I married into a family that, at the time was working tirelessly to make something out of a single license to operate a cannabis dispensary in Worcester County, Md. 5 years later their work has paid off and more opportunities have become available to them. I am currently using the skills I have gained in my roughly 15 year career in the broadcast industry to help start a new dispensary from the ground up in another county while also learning everything I can about the complicated and highly regulated cannabis industry. My ability to communicate in a multitude of circumstances (peer to peer, retailer to consumer, manager to employee, new business to the community/community leaders) has been incredibly useful. Nobody understands a deadline like a broadcast journalist. Executing tasks on a daily basis with efficiency has been an easy “turn”. My experience in the newsroom has me more than capable of handling the pace of work in a traditional setting.I grew up in family that ran tv and radio stations and spent several years managing a newsroom. That experience I am finding translates to the general business world and my shortcomings as a leader then were valuable lessons I bring with me today. To any news colleagues reading this far…if you love what you’re doing, keep going because your work is so important. BUT, if you’re afraid you just can’t do anything else but you want to….take it from me, the newsroom taught you a lot. It turned you into an absolute machine and those 9-5ers won’t know what hit them ;) You got this!
