Dr. Marks has performed in-depth research into several water chemistry, materials, and sourceterm related issues specific to the nuclear power industry. These include investigation of the corrosive effects of nuclear steam generator deposits and the impact of operating procedures on these effects, analysis of the consequences of using specific additives, thermomechanical modeling of mixing processes, modeling of nuclear coolant system corrosion and the generation of radiation fields from activated corrosion products. Dr. Marks is an expert in using data from nuclear plant operation to validate theoretical models and develop empirical models to predict future plant behavior including corrosion, corrosion product deposition, development of radiation fields, and plant responses to chemistry changes. Dr. Marks has developed an expertise in the chemistry of copper, both as a contaminant in steam generator deposits and as a primary construction material in turbogenerator cooling systems. The work that Dr. Marks has performed has utilized his skills in the areas of corrosion science, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics, colloidal science, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. Dr. Marks has also performed numerous calculations and analyses related to detonation and deflagration of gas mixtures associated with nuclear power plant operation and waste processing. Since joining DEI in 1998, Dr. Marks has participated in the revision of the EPRI Primary Water Chemistry Guidelines, Secondary Water Chemistry Guidelines, Primary-to-Secondary Leak Guidelines, Fuels Corrosion and Crud Guidelines, and SG Integrity Assessment Guidelines. Dr. Marks has also been a major contributor to industry efforts to integrate new nuclear power plant designs into the current chemistry guidelines regime.
