I read animals ear tags and enter them into the system. I put animals into the appropriate pens both before and after the sale. I spent one week in UHK as a physiotherapy student. I assessed and treated patients who had diagnoses of neurological conditions such as strokes and traumatic brain injuries, cardio/respiratory conditions such as COPD, patients recovering from Covid 19 and heart attacks. I also assessed and treated patients on the orthopaedic ward who were recovering from falls, hip replacements and knee replacements. I assessed and treated these patients both independently and alongside senior physiotherapists. I saw patients in the rehabilitation gym and on the wards.I spent 9 weeks as a student physiotherapist with the Kerry Paediatric Physiotherapy services. During my time with the service, I had my own case load of patients which I was solely responsible for. I prioritised which patients needed appointments straight away and I sent out appointment letters to these patients, keeping a diary in order to organise my time appropriately. My caseload was varied. Patient’s ages ranged from 3 weeks old to 16 years old. I assessed and treated patients who had a range of conditions such as torticollis, talipes, plagiocephaly, Developmental Coordination Disorder, hypermobility, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. I completed initial assessments and carried out treatment plans for my patients both independently and with my supervisor. A large portion of my patients were babies during this placement. Parents were often anxious, so it was very important for me to listen and explain myself clearly to them. I ensured that parents fully understood any exercises and stretching they had to perform with their babies at home by demonstrating on a doll while the parent carried out the stretch on their child. I recorded SOAP notes in each of my patients’ files after each of their sessions and filed them accordingly. I led an exercise class for children with DCD for 5 weeks. Four children attended the class each week. The class focused on balance and core strength.

I spent 10 weeks as a physiotherapy student with Kerry Intervention Disability services. I received my own caseload of 8 patients. These patients varied in age from 2 to 16. Their mobility levels and intellectual abilities were varied also. I treated children with conditions such as cerebral palsy with GMFCS of 1 through 5, and spina bifida. I was able to see all my patients once a week during my placement. This allowed me to build a strong relationship with my patients and their parents. I worked independently with my patients. I prepared my treatment plan each week for my patients and prior to their appointment I met with my supervisor to discuss the case and my treatment plan for the patient. I worked as a part of a multidisciplinary team which included OT’s, SLT’s, psychologists, domiciliary nurses, and dieticians. I linked with these team members very regularly about my patients. I assisted with Critical Measures Clinics throughout my placement. I assisted with taking goniometry readings and I was responsible for recording the readings of each child. I attended home and school visits to assess for and set up various pieces of equipment such as standing frames and KAYE walkers. I created home exercise programmes for my patients. I created a booklet for the service users that compiled information about pools and gyms throughout Kerry, It included information about accessibility to both the gyms and pools and age requirements to access the facilities independently.

  • Killarney Community Hospital
    Student Physiotherapist
Killarney Community Hospital Aug 2021 - Dec 2021
    Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland
I spent 10 weeks as a physiotherapy student in Killarney Community Hospital. I treated patients who were recovering from stroke, heart attack, spinal cord injury, below knee amputation, hip, knee, and shoulder replacements. I also treated patients who had COPD, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, and patients who were recovering from falls. During this placement it was important for me to have an understanding of the patient’s home set up so that I could ensure the treatments being provided would benefit the patient. For example, it was important to know if the patient had a stairs or steps going into their home so that climbing stairs would be incorporated into their treatment with us. Each morning I attended the patient hand over meeting with members from all of the teams in the hospital including speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and nurses, all of which I worked closely with throughout my placement. I assisted my supervisor with patients that required two people. By the end of my placement, I had my own case load. I assessed and treated patients both by myself and under the guidance of my supervisor. I assessed patients needs for mobility aids such as rollator Zimmer frames, three-wheel rollators, four-wheel rollators, and walking sticks. If the patient was given an aid, I would ensure that the aid was adjusted to the appropriate height for safe usage. I would ensure that the patient understood how to use the aid and that they were safe while doing so. I wrote patient SOAP notes and ensured they were filed correctly.
