Throughout my school breaks, I worked with Dr. Wilson, Dr. Linnell, and Dr. Kiger as a receptionist and vet technician. I communicated with pet owners, tracked client information, helped perform examinations, administered vaccinations, recorded vitals during surgeries, assisted with x-rays, assisted with lab work, prepared medications, and cleaned the facility. I saw a wide variety of cases ranging from general wellness exams to emergency surgeries. The most notable case was an emergency spay due to a uterine infection. It was interesting to see the process and record data during the surgery.

This includes handling money, checking in patrons, and working collaboratively with other pool staff. This job required a great amount of responsibility, communication skills, and hard work. In addition to being liable for the lives of anyone in the pool, I also had to be able to work together with fellow lifeguards, talk to and communicate effectively with patrons, and be constantly aware of possible dangers. To keep this certification, I go through extensive training provided by the American Red Cross every two years and participate in monthly staff trainings at the pool.

As a water safety instructor, I provided the public with the skills and information necessary to be safe and successful swimmers. I was certified to teach a wide range of swim classes for people ages 6 months-adulthood. This includes all the American Red Cross learn to swim classes, parent and child classes, preschool learn to swim, adult swim lessons, swim safety for swim coaches, and masters swimming. I was also certified to teach many safety presentations to the general public such as sun safety and general water safety around the home. In an average swim class, I was responsible for the safety of everyone in the pool and for teaching the class water safety and how to swim. This includes lesson planning, keeping track of each student’s progress, talking to participants and parents about their progress, and ultimately deciding whether or not the participant is ready to pass on to the next level. I also recorded and reported the results to my supervisor and the American Red Cross. In addition to having to recertify every two years and monthly trainings, I constantly had to review Course material due to the vast amount classes that I teach and the extensive requirements for each class.
