The Long Island Children's Museum is a hands-on learning space for children and their families. As the Youth STEM Coordinator, I am responsible for designing educational content for and teaching the Enrichment to Excellence (E2E) Program. The goal of this afterschool program is to reengage, excite, and motivate 240 at-risk middle school students from the Freeport School District through specialized learning experiences. Through LICM's Westbury STEM Initiative, I work with all 1st and 2nd grade students in the Westbury School District to develop experimental and analytical skills. I engage these students and their families in continued STEM learning through Family Fun Nights, designed to bring these experiences into family units. Additionally, I collaborate with two other colleagues to create professional development for Westbury teachers to improve STEM lessons in their classrooms. I also mentor a group of teenager volunteers called the Green Teens. These students work collaboratively to design and implement environmental science and nature programming once each month during the school year and twice weekly during the summer. I initiated two science programs at LICM: Calling Young Scientists (hour long workshops on different science themes such as Rainforest Ecology, Green Architecture, and Cow Eye Dissections) and Citizen Science (monitoring a milkweed garden weekly during the summer to determine whether monarch butterflies are using it for habitat). In my role I also provide professional development twice monthly to staff at LICM on the Lawrence Hall of Science "Reflecting on Practice" program.
