Hello, thank you for taking the time to read my professional profileI have worked as a nurse and educator for over 30 years. This includes being a Lecturer and programme lead in higher education. During this period, I published my first book, which led me back into clinical practice to see if my research on evidence-based practice and workforce strategy could make a difference. I have been privileged to be involved in some great projects that have made a significant difference to patients and HCPs, who frequently work in overcrowded and stressful environments with little support or motivation to improve. I have gained a wealth of experience in service innovation, strategy development, and how to devise and deliver a shared vision of improvement.Three key aspirations provide my professional motivation: I Applying an evidence-base to underpin the care patients receive. This includes recognising patient autonomy and respecting their decisions about their care. I first developed an interest in evidence-based nursing following reading Ford & Walsh (1994) New rituals for old. This revolutionary book made me realise that theory must be driven into practice and practice must generate the theoryII Education, being supported to progress my career and qualify as an emergency nurse, and then a professional educator, feels surreal when I reflect on how I got here. I have been fortunate to have worked with some extraordinary people who have challenged my self-concept and inspired and supported my career. As a professional educator I love supporting learners to continue their professional journey. My greatest reward comes from the emancipatory potential of education and improving the working lives of HCPs, empowering their ability to influence care, and contributing to social mobility, through enabling individuals who may not have aspired to, or been in a position to further their careersIII The consultant nurse role and its unique position of being able to work clinically, identify areas of improvement, develop strategies, engage and support the workforce to deliver evidence based care, through devising educational programmes and then to work alongside the team to achieve the goal is incredibly rewarding I gain the greatest reward from working within the most challenged organisations. Why? Because I know I can make a difference and I know how it feels to work in stressful environments and how these circumstances can result in suboptimal patient outcomes and how detrimental these environments can be to the mental well-being of HCPs simply trying their best.
