About Cliff Koh

Experienced software engineer with a proven track record of strong performance and actualizing impact through my work - whether at an individual contributor level or as a technical lead and mentor to the engineers around me.Very fortunate to have "grown up" at the modern Microsoft, therefore having a front-row seat to the dramatic transformation within the company that, amongst other things, saw it recover its mojo, experience a 10x growth in its stock price, and become the largest participant in open-source in the world. I consider it an incredible privilege to have worked with so many amazing mentors, managers and partners from across the company during my time at Microsoft. But perhaps what I cherished most was the having the opportunity to directly participate in coaching, nurturing and being inspired by the next generation that is ever so more optimistic, energetic and diverse (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGeWNR8CWnA).

First hire at the newly formed team behind the open-sourced Office UI Fabric React - now rebranded as FluentUI for Web - and played a significant role in many aspects of getting the team off the ground initially (e.g. directly driving the release of Fabric 6, thought leadership on multiple technical features and problem domains, to many aspects of operationalization such as onboarding and training new hires, ensuring builds, releases and hotfixes go out on time, and building out lots of automation systems such as https://aka.ms/fabricdemo to improve the team's productivity). Most of my time after the initial bootstrap of the team was spent trying to solve the problem of our team being overwhelmed by the rate of incoming issues and pull requests on GitHub, which was threatening the entire idea of a shared UI component library as Microsoft product teams were not able to get their changes reviewed and released in a timely fashion. At the same time, engineers depending on the shared components were not able to get the support they needed. To that end, I led a small crew to build a GitHub bot service (https://github.com/apps/msftbot, https://portal.fabricbot.ms) on Microsoft Azure that not only successfully achieved its original goal, but also came to be organically and widely adopted by a very large number of other engineering teams from across the company.Fabric Bot received a very large number of enthusiastic kudos from many of its adopters, and came to be used by almost all of Microsoft's significant open-source properties. Despite being managed by a skeletal crew (average funding was 1.75 heads), it provided over three 9s of service up-time and reliability and regularly added new capabilities that expanded upon its value proposition. On Apr 15 2020, Fabric Bot was officially transferred to the One Engineering System (1ES) division to be formally funded, operated and offered as a horizontal service to all open-source engineering teams at Microsoft.
