Solutions Architect

St. Cloud, Minnesota Area

Looking to maximize my impact on our success as a company, I moved into a Solutions Architect role, which was a fairly new discipline to Netgain and required a new set of communication structures to be successful. Partnering with internal administrative, technical, sales, and project management teams, I lead the creation of a new set of processes and procedures to reduce revenue delays and improve product quality. This included change management around design capabilities, RFP and quoting standards, and project documentation to ensure everyone stayed on the same page while our institutional processes naturally continued to improve.Working closely with Sales and Account Management teams meant I was now able to engage directly with clients and prospects to build relationships and design technical solutions from our service catalog that aligned with their business goals. This also gave me the opportunity to teach others about technology and opportunities to improve their technical experiences.Much of my focus was also spent on testing and documenting performance and cost metrics for workload design on the Azure platform. Information gathered was used to optimize the implementation of workloads in Azure by considering SKU limitations, license optimization, and industry best practices. Designs demanded balancing performance and cost while keeping the customer's best interests and strong relationships in mind.To ensure clients continued to receive white glove treatment after a sale, I generated design and expectation documentation to the Cloud Services Delivery team and stayed close to clients during onboarding projects. This proved to be a key success factor in improving the client's onboarding experience and first impressions of our services. Hearing from happy clients after a successful implementation was one of my favorite experiences as it highlighted all the work we had done together to help great people work together.

Deployment Team Lead

St. Cloud, Minnesota Area

An opportunity arose to lead the Deployment (Cloud Services Delivery) team, which I accepted to pursue my interests in team building, communication, and business administration—attributes I had previously known to be essential in producing an enjoyable, high-performing work environment. Up to this point in my career, I had focused on technical proficiency, however, found the world of management and leadership to be a natural expansion of my skill set and fit well with my desire to grow and serve others. It quickly became apparent I would not be able to continue in my technical role and effectively lead the team. After reassessing each team member’s role, I traded my technical responsibilities for project management. With roles realigned, I gained a better understanding of customer needs and how to translate those needs with our technical teams, ensuring both parties were speaking a common language and understood each other’s expectations. This lead to improved product quality, higher customer satisfaction, and building partnerships with clients as opposed to simply providing them a service.Project management was a great fit, though I felt I was now spending too much time on follow ups and the team wasn't seeing the big picture with each project. Myself and a team member worked together closely to create an evolving kanban board unique to our workflows. This not only alleviated our project management issues, but also provided visible metrics to the team which have become a staple of our daily communication. While our many successful onboarding projects are impressive, coaching team members on their personal career goals has been a shining highlight for me. Taking the time to build relationships, helping team members see how their skillsets and interests align with our business needs, and providing opportunities where they can excel has built a fantastic culture of highly talented and motivated IT professionals.

Datacenter Deployment Analyst

St. Cloud, Minnesota Area

Joining Netgain, a local company focused on client experience and technical subject matter expertise, was an amazing opportunity. The deeper I dove into technical content, the further my burning curiosity would take me. My focus revolved around redesigning Microsoft end-user management environments for healthcare clients as we migrated them into our cloud services. This allowed me to pull upon much of my previous experience and ignited most of my proficiencies. One of our most impressive technical projects involved the migration of a complex environment requiring not only the movement of data and workflows into our cloud infrastructure, but also the in-house development of two migration toolsets: One, an automated process to change domain and prepare local user profiles for a large fleet of endpoints; the other, a script to translate security identifiers to overcome an issue with file permissions caused by the lack of an Active Directory trust between source and destination domains. Although the toolsets I developed were very successful, my greatest takeaway was the realization of how critically important communication was throughout the project. Setting expectations between our internal technical teams and the client on a level they could both understand was the true key to this project’s success.Once I understood the true success of the project, I began to focus on improving my communication styles, improving teamwork dynamics and recognized we could accomplish far more together in a high-functioning team with much less effort than I ever could alone.

Systems Analyst

St. Cloud, Minnesota Area

Seeking an opportunity to work on larger and more complex environments, I joined CCHS and focused on my strengths of Active Directory, Group Policy, automation, etc. From the urging of my supervisor, I pursued MCSE certification, making sure to reinforce any new techniques and concepts through careful evaluation and implementation in the production environment when it made sense. I learned much by taking my time to ensure I understood the context behind these concepts.I had also found establishing strong relationships with team members and business units to understand their objectives was again key to successful projects as it had been in my previous positions. Before leaving CCHS in pursuit of larger and more complex environments once more, I learned much technically, but more importantly, understood the importance of proper planning, communication, teamwork, and culture.A favorite accomplishment was again the complete redesign of the Microsoft end-user management environment, including Active Directory; Group Policy; folder structures; mapped drives; and logon script logic. However, this time around the environment was larger, modifications were more complex, and roll out occurred in a very careful, controlled, and monitored manner--a discipline I was already very familiar with from my previous employer.Another favorite accomplishment involved detecting, tracking, coordinating remediation, and locating the source of a malware infection. I found the cat-mouse world of security fascinating and exploited (no pun intended) information learned through this and other security research to greatly expand my understanding of technical designs and concepts, which I would rely upon in my next position.

Mar 2007 - Dec 2010

Network Administrator

Mille Lacs Health System

Onamia, Mn

I had accepted a position as a Help Desk Technician, but within a few months was the sole IT support for a rural hospital of 250+ users and would remain that way for 6 months. Being thrown into the fire, my IT career came alive. While struggling to keep my head above the water in helpdesk calls alone, I quickly found remote management, automation, and establishing relationships with business units to understand their objectives was key to success. Not only did I acquire a massive amount of new technical and time management skills, but also an understanding of healthcare workflows and the critical importance of patient care.My favorite accomplishment was the complete redesign of the Microsoft end-user management environment, including Active Directory; Group Policy; folder structures; mapped drives; and logon script logic. This project would become key to building technical proficiencies throughout my career.

Mar 2005 - Mar 2007

Demo Repair Technician

Cellular 2000

Saint Cloud, Mn

After my internship with PrimeVest Financial Services ended, I sought to grow into an IT position with a similar culture. Cellular 2000 was recommended to me by a friend based upon their culture and convinced me to apply. I had originally planned to transfer into the IT department if an opportunity arose, however, Verizon purchased Cell 2000 in Q1 2005, cutting that plan short.Aside from cell phone repair, I learned the benefits of providing an experience customers will remember by going above and beyond their expectations and the importance company culture plays in creating functional teams.

Jun 2004 - Mar 2005

Desktop Support Internship

Primevest Financial Services

Saint Cloud, Mn

Looking to directly apply skills learned in college, I worked with in-house IT building and deploying PCs, troubleshooting printers and phones, supporting end-users with a variety applications, and working on a few programming projects. By the end of my internship, I had expanded my troubleshooting skills, knowledge of Visual Basic, learned PHP and MySQL, and most importantly, learned the value of producing quality work by following up with end-users at the end of the day to ensure their expectations were met.
