Who is this guy? I'm Senior Research Scientist at the Hertie School, a small policy-oriented university in the centre of Berlin. I'm part of the Data Science Lab and teach core courses in our new Masters in Data Science. This is the second Masters degree I've helped design. Maastricht's Research Masters in European Studies was the other.I've had academic research, infrastructure, and teaching roles in a lot of places, including Harvard, Mannheim, Maastricht, Nottingham, Princeton, and Trinity College Dublin, plus a stint at an enterprise software company. Frankly it's probably time to settle down.ResearchI've done a bunch of work on statistical text analysis, all the way from my PhD on neural networks and word embedding (back in 2001 when it was all called 'semantic space') through content analysis, to policy position measurement, and count data scaling. Lately I've been getting into applied causal inference, with a particular focus on fairness and public policy applications. The intersection of causal inference and machine learning is what I'm into right now. Bayes has taken a back seat lately, but informs pretty much everything I do, whether or not the sampler is running.Tech I was a professional Java developer for a few years. I'm a longtime R developer with a handful of packages and still remember when the community was not nearly such a delight. I'm an intermittent python user to (mostly Django). My ICC-affiliated legal data websites have been running on that for years. And I used to look after the US voter file in my previous job. As data goes, it was... big.Public goodsI have a long running collaboration with the ICC legal tools project and the Human Rights Law Centre at Nottingham. There's a stack of open source software, of course. And despite not being very active lately, I'm still in the top 1% of answerers on stats stackexchange.Oh, and you see that graph in the profile background?
