I worked alongside the Production Manager and fellow coordinators to advise over 50 first-year students in production crews every year. I also acted as a consultant for stage operations in over 40 productions on a four-tiered production level system. These productions ranged from student-run labs to fully-produced six-week runs in main theaters. (We stayed busy.)I also took on numerous technical theatre tasks, spearheading load-ins of theatre technology and hang & focus procedures. And if that weren’t enough, I also got to jingle lots of keys on my belt loop.

This role gave me a taste of the B2C marketing / PR world! I collaborated with fellow publicists on dozens of pitch decks, press releases, and other relevant pieces of content.I also gained some valuable media relations experience, landing placements in Chicago pubs like: WTTW, NBC 5, InsideOut, Chicago Sun-Times, and Time Out Chicago.But that’s not all! I also got to put my LOTR knowledge to work in pitching a Lord of the Rings pop-up event to client Replay Lincoln Park. (Yes, the Gollum standee was life-sized…and terrifying.)

I worked alongside the Head of Marketing and the Artistic Director to maintain the day-to-day production operation for the theater. Some of the most common tasks were: website copywriting, comedy act scheduling (we averaged about 40 shows per week!), and asset proofreading.The big ticket item of this experience, though, was co-planning the Bentwood Festival, a five-day comedy festival with over 100 productions from across the country — with an attendance eclipsing 5,000 patrons.This undertaking involved a fair bit of attendance data analysis (which kickstarted my unironic love for spreadsheets), brought me back into the sweet embrace of MailChimp and all things promotional newsletters, and exposed me to the world of Ticketfly.

I got the quintessential job for English majors: writing center tutor. In this role, I offered feedback on lab reports, PhD dissertations, rhetorical essays, thesis projects, and more.I also took two graduate courses (yeah, they happened in the evening, because that’s what grad students have time for!) on literary pedagogy to supplement past knowledge.

This ignited a love I have for the publishing world. Alongside a small but mighty team, I monitored (hundreds of) submissions, co-managed the social media presence of the journal, and penned email blasts for subscribers.I also shadowed the Associate Editor in her digital design work of the journal’s layout. I taught and mentored a group of talented kiddos from Chicago (with ages ranging from eight to 14).This involved collaborating with my team of fellow teaching artists to deliver lessons on everything from playwriting to acting to stage combat. (I also got to lead my first ever playwriting workshop with the kids — and they produced eerily good first drafts.)
