I am an award-winning journalist, developer and teacher. I worked for 20 years reporting on the environment, social unrest and inequality in Mexico, Latin America, and the Caribbean. I have led major, international reporting projects in the region, recruiting, training and editing the work of talented local journalists and was a member of a team that won a Peabody award for coverage of the economic fallout of violence in Honduras. Beside journalism, I have taught anthropology, soccer, robotics, physics and Engligh in everything from lecture halls to mud huts. I recently founded the media technology startup Studio Canek to combine my passions for teaching, communication and technology. Our projects include interactive 3D maps, software for writing radio scripts and a service analyzing news media with Machine Learning.
