Timony Grammar School

The Ranger Camp is a program in which children k-8 have the ability to interact with other kids and develop friendships within the city of Methuen. Each grade has an assigned teacher and room ( I was designated to 4th grade) and my coworkers were mostly high school or grammar school teachers in their mid to late 20s. The Ranger Camp runs year round, and it offers a two hour before school, and a two hour after school period. Summer schedule runs 7 AM- 6 PM Monday through Friday. My duties require engaging kids in activities, ensuring their safety at all times, reprimanding when needed and most importantly to always remember the emergency bags and devices for the individuals with allergies, diabetes, asthma etc.

The first position was a temporary teaching assistant This program consisted of students who struggle severely in the classroom due to behavioral or psychological issues, and the exposure and experience I gained here is what lead to my interest in teaching and working with kids. I then got a permanent position for the remainder of the school-year with a kindergarten child with an extremely rare gene brain mutation, and also severe ADHD. The gene mutation made his attentiveness even worse, and impacted him cognitively and socially in a way I had never seen before with any other disability. Much like the prior job, the first week was immensely difficult and on average I had to reprimand or redirect his attention 84 times/day (tallying this was part of my 1 on 1 duties). Everyday I began to understand him more and more and I even became annoyed when another faculty member got angry with him. By June 20th he was sprinting off the bus to see me every morning, and to see his schoolwork progress with my help made this job more fulfilling than any I'd had before.
