Researcher

Greater Seattle Area

After working with Rainier Beach Action Coalition (RBAC) as a student in the fall of 2015, I was asked to return and conduct research over the summer of 2016. My research informed the creation of a neighborhood report card, based on the Prevention Institute's THRIVE model, an evidence-based framework for creating resilience and health in vulnerable environments. Key Accomplishments:Identifying community health indicators: After meeting with our client and conducting a review of other studies using the THRIVE model, I identified the health indicators we used to measure the neighborhood's health while comparing it to a control site and the city of Seattle.Data collection & analysis: I identified primary and secondary data sources to use as proxies for health indicators. Primary data sources included surveys we conducted in collaboration with George Mason University between 2015-2016. Secondary data sources included US Census, Center for Disease Control, and Bureau of Labor Statistics. I also standardized Consumer Expenditure Data to measure "economic health" in addition to measuring the consumption of healthy and unhealthy products. Final report & presentation: I was the primary writer for the final report, and co-presented our findings to RBAC's leadership in December 2016.By collaborating with the research team, our client, and a Graphic Designer, I condensed a 100-page research paper into an approachable one-sheet handout for the community.
