Happy to be a full-time teacher, researcher, and writer after more than 25 years in leadership and administration, I'm also happy to be part of the reinvention of the university at ASU and still linked to the LSE as Centennial Professor. But I'm not happy about the massive disruption brought by CoVid-19, or what it reveals about the willingness of ostensibly democratic leaders to be authoritarian (as well as often incompetent), about stark inequalities and how easily they are tolerated, and about under-investment in public health and health care for all, especially in the US. I try to remain hopeful that a renewal of solidarity and thinking in terms of public goods and the public good might follow. I'm studying social transformations with special attention to democracy, solidarity, and publics; also technology, community, and relations across different scales from the interpersonal to the global; and not least ways in which culture and engineering coincide in transformations of the human.
