Investigate calcium sulfoaluminate durability and chemical reactions via laboratory testing and thermodynamic modelling.

Jan 2015 - Jul 2016

Scientist Ii

Calera Corporation

485 Alberto Way Suite 210, Lost Gatos, Ca 95037

Developed fiber cement formulations utilizing calcium carbonate cement and a wide range of cellulose and synthetic fibers. Created laboratory fiber cement sample production methodologies that minimized sample variability induced by operators. Investigated accelerated curing regimes to rapidly advance full strength development. Scaled from laboratory fiber cement formulations to pilot scale production. Worked as a member of the product launch team to establish market demands and product requirements, and then to produce the documentation necessary to launch a commercial product.Worked with outside partners to adopt calcium carbonate cement for marine cementing applications in biologically sensitive environments. Formulated novel products based on carbon negative cement. Increased the production rate of cement by two fold by improving system parameters. Performed safety reviews of laboratories and pilot facilities. Increased calcium carbonate cement's strength nearly threefold through particle packing models.

Further the development of more sustainable cements such as calcium sulfoaluminate and calcium carbonate cements. Investigate alternative waste streams for use as chemical admixtures and mix water in concrete. Utilize multiple synchrotron based materials characterization techniques at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Advanced Light Source.Proactive in proposing new research topics, process suggestions, laboratory improvements. Enable new group members to conduct research and foster communication and knowledge sharing between our group’s core Ph.D. researchers, post doctoral fellows, and visiting scholars.Research cement phases with high pressure x-ray diffraction to determine their bulk modulus. Study calcium sulfoaluminate cement hydration using scanning transmission x-ray microscopy, x-ray diffraction, thermo gravimetric analysis, isothermal conduction calorimetry and soft x-ray microscopy. Develop a novel technique of mitigating alkali silica reaction, a leading cause in the failure of concrete, with tomography, dimensional stability tests, x-ray microscopy, and stereoscopic scanning electron microscopy.
