Profile bio

About Rotana Hay

Born and raised in a small village in Cambodia, I have found myself very fortunate to be where I am today. Due to war, my parents did not manage to finish secondary school and they grow rice and make traditional silk textiles for a living. We lived a simple and carefree life. A trip one day to the capital city on the back of my dad’s motorbike gave me the first chance to see some interesting concrete buildings, and that sparked my interest in the field of civil engineering. The experience has led me to believe that under the right environment, with a dose of perseverance, one could go far beyond their own limits. The concept has become a guiding principle of my actions and with this, I am devoted to using my skills and knowledge to inspire the younger generation and to making a positive impact to the society. The commitment has brought about an illustrious education and career background. With support from various funding agencies, I managed to obtain a Bachelor Degree from National University of Singapore, an MSc Degree from Imperial College London and a PhD Degree from University of California Berkeley. During the course, I also managed to gain a wealth of practical and teaching experiences by working as a structural engineer for Arup Singapore, Technical Manager for Chip Mong Concrete and a lecturer at local universities in Cambodia. Still eager to explore new research frontiers, I am currently serving as a Research Associate at New York University Abu Dhabi. From those fond childhood memories, I learn to appreciate and value little things around me. The overseas experience has fostered me to be an independent, flexible, adaptable and respectful individual. My enthusiasm, innovative mind, problem solving skills and hard work have also enabled me to thrive through all the challenges faced in life. With an extensive industrial, research and teaching experience, I am committed to synthesizing these capabilities to make an impactful contribution of the society.

Listed skills include Structural Engineering, Finite Element Analysis, Microsoft Office, Sap2000, and 46 others.
