GMB wish to continue to establish clear links between learning and training that lead to sustainable employment for young people entering the world of work, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds with recognised employers. The Project Team have identified that young people who would traditionally have been successful in applying for apprenticeship places are now finding the door closed. There has been a significant shift in applicants who would in previous years have applied to go to college/university now taking these apprenticeship places with employers able to ‘cherry-pick’.Therefore we will continue supporting models that lead to greater GMB engagement and seize opportunities that bring the best opportunities for young people – particularly around the apprenticeship levy. This will be by:• Working with key employers• Continuing to increase the number of ‘preferred providers’• Developing provider agreements (Memorandum of Understanding) using model MOU’s.It is our intention to highlight champion good working practice/models using the case studies we have developed. With the introduction of the apprenticeship levy, we will ensure that the necessity to include all groups is met – particularly from disadvantaged backgrounds – rather than a policy of exclusion.Project manager responsibilities:• Manage activities and outcomes required by Unionlearn/BIS• Manage members of the Project Team to achieve the agreed Regional targets • To take responsibility for Project Team members in identifying training needs• To implement the principles and policies of GMB@Work• To provide expert assistance and knowledge to Branches to reflect the needs of young workers• To provide expert support to Union representatives on Apprenticeships and Traineeship issues, encouraging the setting up of good quality workplace schemes
