We hypothesized that temperature and pH would impact tentacle extension time, by altering dinoflagellate concentration (causing bleaching) and thus impacting metabolic rate and the allocation of resources. In this study, Aiptasia were placed under four conditions that altered either temperature or pH, temperature and pH, or neither. They were tested every two days over the course of ten weeks. Under each condition the anemones were touched by a “threat” stimulus until they were fully retracted. Once retracted the stimulus was removed and the time it took for the re-extension of their tentacles was recorded. The results demonstrated that ocean acidification and rising marine temperatures decrease mean tentacle extension time, however that acidity can temporarily counteract the effect of increased temperature. Overall, our findings provided insight into the future of sea anemones on coral reefs, including the short-term protection from ocean acidification and the detrimental long-term effects of global warming water temperatures. Field work was conducted using a transect and quadrants to identify and examine lichen in different areas of the Stavanger and Sandnes region, mapping both diversity and density. The results indicated that lichen diversity and density are dependent upon air quality, the greater the amount of air pollution in an area, the lower the densities and diversities of particular lichen species. Through further analysis I was able to discover two possible bioindicators for the Stavanger and Sandnes region of Norway. Show less
