After leading the development of our first territorial cancer strategy (2015), I focused on strengthening structures and systems within our transforming health system to deliver person-centered services throughout the cancer care continuum. This work is embedded within the greater context of cultural capability, social determinants of health, equity, Indigenous health, and community development. I was fortunate to lead and grow a dynamic team, and be able to collaborate with partners in NWT communities, Indigenous governing organizations, civil society, other Canadian jurisdictions, and abroad.

Kigali, Rwanda

I served as a senior manager with programmatic, financial, and representational responsibilities within a USD $29.4 million health systems strengthening project in Rwanda. I led strategic management including planning, implementation, communications, and reporting, and was intimately involved in budget analysis, human resource management, monitoring and evaluation, grants management, and procurement. I directly managed relationships with the Rwandan Ministry of Health, the United States Agency for International Development, headquarters, and—our most important partners—district health units, hospitals, and health centers.

Kigali, Rwanda

In this role I led organizational capacity development. Apart from facilitating the development of the association’s first strategic plan, notable achievements include: a rapid social needs assessment that shaped advocacy and fundraising strategy; establishment of a gender-sensitive M&E system to enable data-informed decision-making; direct contribution to the Rwandan Gender Policy through participation in the National Gender Steering Committee.

Esteli, Nicaragua

My primary role was to evaluate the project’s gender equality strategy and recommend actions to strengthen gender mainstreaming. I also assessed the organizational capacity of the project team and was consulted in capacity strengthening. During the socioeconomic assessment of the intervention zone I performed quality control/supervisory tasks such as training and supervision of data entry.

Guatemala City, Guatemala

In a Spanish report, I outlined the results of an independent assessment of national health information systems, proposing metrics for gender, age, and ethnicity. I planned and coordinated meetings and seminars among governmental, non-governmental, and United Nations agencies.

I provided supportive counselling and safety planning/crisis prevention assistance to clients, including through the operation of a 24-hour women’s crisis telephone line. Additionally I assisted survivors of violence across the NWT with applications for Emergency Protection Orders as per the new NWT Protection Against Family Violence Act.
