Environmental Education Volunteer
While learning to speak Spanish and navigating a new culture, I worked alongside a community in central Mexico to help solve their environmental challenges. The projects I developed were primarily in the realm of Environmental Education and Natural Resources Conservation. My main achievements included the following:• After writing a project and budget proposal, I was awarded grant funds from the United States Agency of International Development (USAID) to organize community training and manage the construction of 7 ferrocement rainwater capture cisterns;• Creating a vegetable garden and compost with local school staff, and leading activities in the garden with over 150 elementary school students;• Forming and co-facilitating an after-school environmental youth club to provide 39 middle school students the opportunity to dedicate part of their time to the improvement of their community. As a secondary project, I taught English as a Second Language to a variety of students. As described below in the Volunteer Experience section, I served on two Volunteer committees: the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Team, and the Volunteer Advisory Committee (VAC). My 2-year term of service was suddenly cut short in March 2020 with the emergence of the global COVID-19 pandemic, as all Peace Corps Volunteers worldwide were evacuated from their host countries. During the evacuation process, I was able to transfer my remaining project responsibilities to community members, who had demonstrated their ability to complete the projects we started together.
Senior Staff Geologist
As a Senior Staff Geologist, I worked in both field staff and project management roles on the investigation and remediation of sites impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, and metals. My experience included:• Writing project Scope of Work and Budget proposals;• Groundwater, surface water, and soil sampling;• Vapor Intrusion (i.e., soil gas, sub-slab, and indoor air) sampling;• Operating Photoionization Detectors (PIDs), GEM Landfill Gas Meters, peristaltic and submersible pumps, and other field equipment;• Oversight of drillers and subcontractors completing monitoring well installations, well abandonment, remediation system installation, and system decommissioning;• Logging soil and rock lithology to determine well screen placements;• On-site operation and maintenance (O&M) of groundwater and soil vapor treatment systems;• Analysis of sample results and remediation system performance data;• Writing annual and quarterly status reports, work plans, and technical memoranda;• Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) including ArcGIS to create figures that illustrate sample results and groundwater flow contours;• Creating interactive, 3D visualizations of site geology and groundwater plumes using Earth Volumetric Studio (EVS).
Staff Geologist
Geologist
My primary responsibilities included performing soil and groundwater sampling, natural gas pipeline leak surveys, oversight of drillers and subcontractors, and report writing, especially Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments. I performed field work in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Idaho.
Research Intern
I was selected by the Department of Earth Sciences to work under Katsumi Matsumoto, PhD, researching water circulation patterns in Lake Superior using a numerical model and modeled dye tracer. I presented the results of my research to University of Minnesota faculty, graduate students, and fellow research interns, and co-authored a research paper which was published by G-cubed journal (AGU Publications) in 2015.
