About David Wilde

I am lucky, I've always known what I've wanted to be when I grow up and now I'm doing it. I have worn many hats throughout my career, systems administrator, software developer, DevOps engineer, SRE to name a few; all of these hats were unique but they all had one thing in common, they all require strong problem solving skills and a desire to make things better. That is what I love to do, I love to solve problems and I love to make things better, it has been a driving force throuought my career and it is still what gets me up in the morning.I enjoy very tough and interesting problems, something very esoteric that requires diving into something I've never seen before motivates me greatly, but I think I understand better than most that not all problems are tough or interesting. Sometimes a problem is mundane or repetative, but often those problems need to be resolved more urgently than the tough problem that is baffling everyone. I was once tasked with cleaning up a software gating system that had several consistently failing jobs. This was not an interesting problem, it was a long list of gating jobs that each generated massive log files that needed to be gone through and either deleted or fixed, no one wanted to do it and so the problem just got worse. I rolled up my sleeves and went to work, making jobs green one at a time. After a short period of time people started to notice that our gates were running faster, and the quality and cadence of our software development was improving. By fixing the forgotten gate jobs we began to discover issues earlier and our development quality of life noticibly improved. This experience, something I really did not want to do when I started became a highlight of my tenure in that position, and it taught me a valuable lesson. If you are interested in having a conversation please reach out, let me know that you read this far and I'll be happy to talk. I get a lot of Linked-In spam so if I don't reply please try again.

Listed skills include Linux, System Administration, Cloud Computing, Nfs, and 47 others.

I am currently building out an inventory microservice for the OpenStack Ansible[1] (OSA) project. The osaconfig microservice is written in Go and utilizes protocol buffers to build a complete inventory for OSA based on customer requirements and configuration and transfer that inventory object to the target cloud. The microservice is deployed on Kubernetes and can reside either on or off prem. On the client side I am writing a custom inventory script for Ansible in Python to consume the inventory using the protocol buffers via grpc.Additionaly as a core reviewer on the OSA project I am working with OpenStack and Ansible to quickly and reliably deploy OpenStack Clusters. Since starting on the team we have revolutionized the way in which OpenStack is deployed on large scale clusters, becoming a de facto method of deployment.I was the PTL of the internal RPC-O[2] project for the Liberty cycle, during which time we improved our deployment times, ELK[3] logging stack, and the in-place upgrade procedure for OpenStack Ansible clusters. Because of this work, we are able to upgrade a running OpenStack cluster between major versions with little to no instance downtime and minimal (usually under 1 minute) control plane downtime.I have also worked extensively on the ELK (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) logging stack, utilizing ELK we are able to provide a consolidated window in the myriad OpenStack, system and event logs of an entire cluster. This provides a single point of entry for quickly determining and examining performance issues, bottlenecks, and security events.[1] https://github.com/openstack/openstack-ansible[2] https://github.com/rcbops/rpc-openstack[3] https://www.elastic.co/products
