I am lucky, I've always known what I've wanted to be when I grow up and now I'm doing it. I have worn many hats throughout my career, systems administrator, software developer, DevOps engineer, SRE to name a few; all of these hats were unique but they all had one thing in common, they all require strong problem solving skills and a desire to make things better. That is what I love to do, I love to solve problems and I love to make things better, it has been a driving force throuought my career and it is still what gets me up in the morning.I enjoy very tough and interesting problems, something very esoteric that requires diving into something I've never seen before motivates me greatly, but I think I understand better than most that not all problems are tough or interesting. Sometimes a problem is mundane or repetative, but often those problems need to be resolved more urgently than the tough problem that is baffling everyone. I was once tasked with cleaning up a software gating system that had several consistently failing jobs. This was not an interesting problem, it was a long list of gating jobs that each generated massive log files that needed to be gone through and either deleted or fixed, no one wanted to do it and so the problem just got worse. I rolled up my sleeves and went to work, making jobs green one at a time. After a short period of time people started to notice that our gates were running faster, and the quality and cadence of our software development was improving. By fixing the forgotten gate jobs we began to discover issues earlier and our development quality of life noticibly improved.
