For Take-off start-up showcases, see: https://www.nwo.nl/en/researchprogrammes/take-off/success-stories-take-off.My goal in life is to help thrust our society to a more sustainable future.Science and technology can deliver great innovations for practical needs of people, businesses and our planet. But, we do need the translation from knowledge to application...!At science funder NWO I help to bring academia and industry together to achieve visible impact in society. As coordinator of the NWO Take-off programme, I run four subsidy instruments that fund academic entrepreneurs and spin-off companies with over € 8.0 M per year. We fund ~80 feasibility studies and ~20 start-ups each year. See https://www.nwo.nl/en/researchprogrammes/take.At NWO domain Applied and Engineering Sciences (TTW), I am involved in a project portfolio focused on Advanced Materials, where lots of exciting projects span the gap between fundamental science and application in products of everyday life, crossing the nano-, micro-, and macro regimes. I manage ~€20 M in government subsidies for projects, from coatings, thin films and surfaces to nanomaterials, metamaterials and construction materials. All our projects have industrial and/or societal partners represented in User Committees that bi-annually meet with the research team to discuss directions of the project, to learn from each other, be inspired by lab and site visits, and all that helps to maximize the chances of scientific ánd societal impact.
